Chapter 11

The next morning we overslept so we missed church. I don’t know why I didn’t hear the alarm clock go off. I rolled over and noticed that Darren wasn’t in bed. Our bathroom light was on and the door was open. I approached the door and saw Darren on the phone. I wasn’t sure who he was talking to, but from his tone I could tell it wasn’t a pleasant call. Darren entered the bedroom with a frown on his face.

“Honey, what’s wrong?” I asked.

“That was my mom’s nosey neighbor, Henry on the phone telling me that Mom has moved to a senior home.”

“You just cut her yard not too long ago. Why didn’t she tell you herself?”

“My point exactly. This is ridiculous,” Darren fumed.

“Well, did he tell you the name of the place or where it’s located?”

“Yeah, Lakeview Estates. On the north side of town. Mom and I had talked about her moving there after my father died. She had thought about selling the house then, and I offered to cover the difference between her income and the rent to help her stay there if she wanted to, but she wouldn’t hear of it at the time. I guess she changed her mind. Won’t be long before she needs help with the rent—it ain’t cheap. But at least I know if I pay Lakeview directly, her basic needs—shelter, electricity, utilities and three hot meals a day—will be taken care of. My money won’t be going toward the boat.”

Though I wasn’t crazy about this idea because I knew that Mother Holley would stop at nothing to get whatever she wanted out of her son, I also knew that I handled the finances in our household. If and when I put Lakeview Estates on auto-draft, that dollar amount would be a non-negotiable, done deal. “Honey, I think you should go there and talk to your mom.”

“I need a few days to calm down before I do that. As a matter of fact, I’m headed to the gym; I need to clear my head.” He tilted his neck to one side and then the other. Both times, there was an audible cracking sound.

“Ok baby,” I said, giving him a hug and a kiss.

When Darren left I jumped up and threw some clothes on. It was time for me to pay my mother-in-law a visit. We needed to have a woman-to-woman talk. In the words of Shirley Brown: Barbara...this is Shirley...This mess between her and Darren would have to end today. I didn’t like seeing my husband look beat down.

I pulled up the address on my phone and retrieved the directions to the senior home.

When I arrived at Lakeview Estates I saw it was a gated community that looked like an upscale apartment complex. Of course I wasn’t surprised, because Mother Holley always had to have the best of everything. The grounds were well-manicured and there was a beautiful water fountain displayed near the entrance of the facility.

Before getting out of the car, I sent Amber a text telling her I would be back soon.
